There are many different types of moles that vary in different shapes, sizes and colors. Moles can be present anywhere on the skin and can range in color from light brown to red, blue, dark brown, gray or black. Some moles might be flat and smooth, while others may be slightly raised and rough. Others might even contain dark hairs. While most moles are harmless, some moles can contain abnormal or atypical cells that have a higher risk for becoming skin cancer.
An atypical mole is a mole that grows uncontrollably and has some uncommon characteristics. While an atypical mole itself is not cancerous, it can be a sign that a person is at a higher risk for developing skin cancer.
It is important to be familiar with the early warning signs for moles that could develop into malignant melanoma. Simply remember the ABCD’s of melanoma when examining your moles:
- A = Asymmetry of outline
- B = Border irregularity
- C = Color irregularity
- D = Diameter greater than 6mm
We recommend you perform a self-examination monthly. If you notice any irregularities in your moles, please call our office to schedule an appointment. Dr. Norman can determine the risk potential of the mole and if any preventative treatment will be necessary.
